Haundrix Chess is a free open source chess program that can be used for playing against your computer and for viewing/editing your PGN files.

It ships with three chess engines with different playing styles: Crafty 23.0, GNU Chess 5.07.9b and Sjeng 11.2. They're all configured with a built in openings book to make for an interesting game. When playing against Crafty it's possible to adjust the engine skill to match your playing strength.

Currently, it's main features are:

  • cool move animations and sound effects,
  • a sleek user interface with smart one-click move input,
  • several piece sets to choose from,
  • a move history view with standard algebraic notation and figurine symbols,
  • human vs human, human vs computer and computer vs computer matches under time controls,
  • import from/export to PGN file format.

Download it and have fun!

We have started the development of Haundrix Chess 0.2.
We'd like to thank all of you who are giving us valuable feedback on Haundrix Chess 0.1 and ask for your help to make the next release even better.

There are several means of contributing to the project. Some highly needed skills at the moment are:

  • graphic artists to design menu and toolbar icons and general artwork,
  • Java developers to work on an implementation of the UCI protocol.

If you'd like to contribute in these areas please get in touch with us through our open discussion forum.

March 8th, 2010 Haundrix Chess 0.1 Released

We're pleased to announce a brand new release of Haundrix Chess!

The major new feature is allowing one to play against the computer, so that you can challenge the silicon brain on your desk.
Haundrix Chess 0.1 ships with three chess engines with different playing styles: Crafty 23.0, GNU Chess 5.07.9b and Sjeng 11.2. They're all configured with a built in openings book to make for an interesting game. When playing against Crafty it's possible to adjust the engine skill to match your playing strength.
Many thanks to all of those involved with the development of these engines, in particular to Michel Van den Bergh, Robert Hyatt and Gian-Carlo Pascutto.

Other novelties brought by this release are:

  • sound effects to give life to the game,
  • time controls,
  • the engine view, to allow one to peek into the computer's mind,
  • taking a screenshot of the board image to the clipboard,
  • flipping the board side,
  • new commands: move now, offer draw, resign, set game result.

Enjoy it!
